Equilibrium sediment transport, grade and discharge for suspended-load-dominated flows on Earth, Mars and Titan

چکیده
Recent surface observations have emphasised the importance of bedload transport by rivers and streams on Mars Titan. Previous “hydraulic” analysis, however, has also shown that as suspended load should be possible, if not more prevalent due to lower critical shear stresses, under reduced gravity conditions compared with Earth; where dominant mode sediment flux is load. A new suspended-load equilibrium condition (zero net erosion deposition) constraint advanced, using a flux-balance model applicable (capacity) limited alluvial channels. The theory unifies Gilbert's relation for slope flow capacity Shields criterion incipient motion. Shields-stress analysis shows thresholds Earth, Titan are dynamically similar. Thus, despite large differences in dimensional variations slopes depths required threshold comparatively modest. Under conditions, there exists slightly higher potential load; except systems involving high particle-fluid density ratios, may apply organic particles Critically we show graded channels develop gentler gravity, steeper previously inferred based generalized hydraulic geometry relationships terrestrial river submarine We further argue use analogues formed physically justified. Finally, channels, markedly discharges, implications mechanistic-based discharge predictions precipitation models.

Titan , Mars and Earth : Entropy Production by Latitudinal Heat Transport
Temperature contrasts between warm tropics and cool high latitudes depends on how efficiently heat is transported by the atmosphere (and oceans) from the tropics. This heat transport is generally assumed to be proportional to atmospheric pressure, but we show with a simple model that this prediction fails by orders of magnitude for Mars and Titan. However, a basic principle, previously postulat...
متن کاملSedimentary Processes on Earth, Mars, Titan, and Venus
The atmospheres of solid planets exert a fundamental control on their surfaces. Interactions between atmospheric and geologic processes influence the morphology and composition of surfaces, and over the course of geologic time determine the historical evolution of the planet’s surface environments including climate. In the case of Earth, the origin of life likely occurred within surface environ...
متن کاملSediment transport by liquid surficial flow: Application to Titan
Sediment transport by surficial flow likely occurs on Titan. Titan is thought to have a volatile cycle, such as on Earth and likely in the past on Mars, which would entail surficial liquid flow. And surficial flow is implied in interpretations of Cassini–Hyugens data as showing fluvial channels, which would require sediment transport by surficial flow to form the observable features. We present...
متن کاملAtmospheric acoustics of Titan, Mars, Venus, and Earth
Planetary atmospheres are complex dynamical systems whose structure, composition, and dynamics intimately affect the propagation of sound. Thus, acoustic waves, being coupled directly to the medium, can effectively probe planetary environments. Here we show how the acoustic absorption and speed of sound in the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, Titan, and Earth (as predicted by a recent molecular acou...
متن کاملChoosing the Best Hierarchical Clustering Technique Based on Principal Components Analysis for Suspended Sediment Load Estimation
1- INTRODUCTION The assessment of watershed sediment load is necessary for controling soil erosion and reducing the potential of sediment production. Different estimates of sediment amounts along with the lack of long-term measurements limits the accessibility to reliable data series of erosion rate and sediment yield. Therefore, the observed data of suspended sediment load could be used to ...
